Not content to re-issue an out-of-print book with a new introduction, Stebbins undertook a thorough reexamination of the painter’s career in the light of a quarter century of scholarship in the field and of the resurfacing of numerous pictures.
It was the third most valuable painting by Martin Johnson Heade, and it was called Magnolias on Gold Velvet Cloth. Inexperts from the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston confirmed its origins and offered a good price to the owner.
The painting was still in its original frame and in perfect condition. They selected the best two hundred for this volume, some from the fine art tradition as represented by Thomas Moran and Martin Johnson Heade; others by self-taught visionaries.
